Setting your New Year nutrition goals: The do’s and the don’ts

Setting your New Year nutrition goals: The do’s and the don’ts

Do you ever take time to self-reflect? It has become a habit in our household, a vital ingredient in our well-being. There is something universally significant about the closing of a chapter and the potential of a new start that every year brings. As we close the door on the past year, we take a few days to just reflect. We also look back at the milestones we’ve achieved...

For us, these were: launching VRVE, relocating to Brisbane, welcoming another puppy to the family, Kennett landing his dream job, and getting engaged after 7 years. Proud and grateful for what we've achieved, it motivates us to set future goals in motion.

We use this time to not only envision our goals as individuals but also as a family.

After a while of integrating this practice within our lives, we have found a recurring theme –  every single year, we have goals relating to nutrition and well-being. Ultimately, all of our goals are linked to our health in some way. If you think about it, all the intentions we set to achieve a happier, more fruitful life begin with a focus on our physical health.

Planning for financial freedom and early retirement? Heck, if you don’t feel good, what’s the point? When we plan to start our family, having the energy to raise kids is our number one concern. Planning to drive a business forward? Self-discipline and drive in our personal lives reflect how we can operate within and lead a team. Planning a wedding? For me, I can’t think of anything worse than not fitting into my dream dress. The list goes on and on.

In this way, health to us has always been the cornerstone of our goal-setting. A healthy body and mind are the fundamental foundations of productivity, leading an energised lifestyle, and ageing with vitality. And by far the easiest way to improve your health is through your mouth and into your stomach – what you feed it to function optimally. Your digestive system, which feeds your organs, gives you life.

But here’s the thing, we don’t just want to survive, we want to feel alive in everything we do, in every phase, and every journey of our lives!

Here are our tried and tested tips for setting your nutrition goals for 2024:

The DO’s:

  1. Start with the end in mind: Think about where you want to be 12 months from now, and clearly visualise this image.
  1. Make your goals digestible: Break it up into quarters, and then months, and then weeks and daily routine.
  1. Accountability: Tell someone you trust about the goals you have set. A friend, a spouse, a parent, a child, a coach, a colleague, a mentor. Whoever knows, will intuitively check in with you and help you stay motivated.
  1. Seek support: From your community, online coaches, podcasts, books, VRVE (email us if you need help with goal setting...we’re beyond passionate and would love to help!)
  1. Daily habits: Consistency is key. You will experience the compound effect of taking small steps towards improvement every day.

The DONT’s:

  1. Search for quick fixes: They don’t exist and they’re not sustainable. As much as some would wish, there is no kind of magic pill or fad diet that works. You need to work for it, and it takes time, but health is a reward in itself!
  1. Set goals that are out of reach: The ‘ever optimist’ and the ‘lucky one’ often don’t achieve their goals because they were unrealistic from the start. Be audacious, but still realistic.
  1. Compare yourself to others: Social media is the worst for falling into this trap of comparison. Remember, people are inclined to share the ‘highlight reels’ of their lives. We don’t see their bad days or when they wanted to give up. Self-comparison is key – the only person you need to beat, is the one you saw in the mirror yesterday.
  1. Make your goals invisible: Most people forget about their goals if they don’t see them in front of them, and end up stagnating or digressing to where they were before. Or as we like to call it, being a “gonnar” - I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna do that, but never end up doing those things. Make your goals visible by having a vision board or calendar invites as self-reminders.
  1. Give up: Adversity is a given, just like tax and the sun shining tomorrow morning. The key to overcoming this adversity? Adopt a growth mindset of viewing failures or challenges as the perfect opportunity to learn and grow. Keep your head up and keep grinding.
